Chilango er Mexico City’s indbyggere. Hawkers betegner gadesælgerne, som arbejder i den uformelle sektor, flytter sig fra sted til sted i storbyen for at sælge alskens ting.
Gadesælgere fylder i bybilledet, indtager det offentlige rum, tilpasser sig og transformerer byens rum og spiller desuden en central social og økonomisk rolle i verdens metropoler. På én gang elsket og hadet.
14 kunstværker om Mexico Citys gadesælgere fletter sig ind i Københavns bymidte: En billedkunstinstallation bestående af kæmpe ruller af brugt tøj, en markedsplads med presenninger og lyde fra Mexico City’s markeder, en gadesælger som sælger kloninger af Barbiedukker og robotter.
CHILANGO HAWKERS is 14 contemporary urban artworks from Mexico City in the middle of Copenhagen. Chilango Hawkers are no longer isolated people selling fruits, vegetables or food on the street, but organized social ‘performers’ that take up important political and economical tasks in the city. They have become distributors of recycled, transformed, imported and smuggled merchandise in a global economy.

CHILANGO HAWKERS ARTIST TALK:
6 af de 14 mexikanske kunstnere taler om, hvordan samtidskunsten i Mexico City er rykket tættere på dens beboere i forskellige offentlige rum, og om hvordan CHILANGO HAWKERS kombinerer storbyens kulturelle og fysiske infrastrukturer med deres urbane interventioner. Kunstnerne vil også komme ind på, hvordan de har omplantet én af de mest kontroversielle sider ved Mexico City: gadesælgere (HAWKERS), så den er blevet en del af METROPOLIS i København.
